Two of the winners of the foundation's Metalworking Craftsman of the Year award, Michel Lefaivre and David Kucer have made a specialty of producing weapons in miniature. While Michel Lefaivre builds for his own pleasure and does not sell what he makes, David Kucer has made a lifelong occupation of making and selling miniature guns to collectors around the world, illustrating two different approaches to the avocation. In addition, gun engraver Roger Ronnie has also built several scale model weapons, while his occupation is to engrave the full size versions. Represented on this page are some additional makers of miniature arms who have achieved worldwide acclaim. These examples were loaned for display by the Miniature Arms Society to the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum in Carlsbad, CA in January, 2013 for a year-long display so the public can get a first-hand look at the work of these master craftsmen. If you visit the San Diego/Orange County area, you can see them in person during the display period. Once they are returned, we will leave this page in place as a way for others to enjoy and learn about them.
Founded in 1973, the Miniature Arms Society is a group of miniature arms enthusiasts who have joined together to promote and encourage interest in making and collecting all kinds of miniature arms including pistols, rifles, cannon, suits of armor, knives, swords, etc. Emphasis is on artistic beauty and craftsmanship. Due to the rarity of most of the pieces, the investment value is also a factor, as items of fine craftsmanship made in limited numbers have historically increased in value at a rate that outpaces inflation. Collecting miniature arms is a fascinating hobby, partly because the pieces combine beauty with fine craftsmanship and are a joy to possess. The fun of "the chase" also appeals to the collector of a valuable item made in limited quantities. There are several makers worldwide who have achieved top reputations among collectors. Their work is in high demand. In addition, there are many other craftsmen out there who may build only one or two fine pieces for their own enjoyment, but these pieces may eventually find their way into the market. Some collectors own upwards of 150 miniatures, while the typical collection probably numbers about 15. Of course, one of the values of working in miniature as well as collecting miniatures is the small amount of space taken up to work on and display them compared to the full-size counterpart.
The rate of production or fabrication of miniature arms has hardly changed since the 16th century when master makers were few. Today there are still relatively few master miniature arms makers throughout the world. There are, however, several hundred craftsmen and hobbyists who make a few miniature arms now and then for their own collections or to make a few extra dollars. These are the ones the collector sometimes finds by his own efforts or by a network of friends who locate the makers for them.
The term "masterpiece" derives from the world of the traditional craftsmen. In early times, a master gun maker would employ an apprentice who he was teaching the trade. The apprentice would do much of the more laborious work while learning the fine points from the master. Generally, the apprentice worked for free or low wages during his apprenticeship. His goal was to eventually become a master himself. When he felt he was sufficiently skilled to take the title of "master," his master would test him by having him build a miniature gun. He had to make every part and master each aspect of the production process, with the additional challenge of making it at a small size. When he presented his "masterpiece" to the master for inspection it had to be perfect. If it was up to the master's standards, the apprentice was then allowed to call himself a "master" and go into business for himself, finding his own apprentice to whom he would pass on the secrets of the trade. (One can imagine that the test must have been very critically judged, for if the apprentice passed, the master would be both looking for a new apprentice and losing a highly skilled, low paid employee. He would also now find himself competing with his former apprentice unless he was old enough to retire.)

A model is a replica that looks like the original item at either full size or more often a reduced size. It is not a requirement that it duplicate the functionality of the original. A miniature, on the other hand, does represent every feature and function of the original, generally using the actual materials and processes used to make the original, but at a reduced size. For this reason, miniatures are much more difficult to fabricate and are correspondingly more valuable than mere models.
Miniature arms of the highest quality do duplicate all the functions, materials and finishes of the originals they represent. It is often asked if they actually fire small bullets. In most cases, particularly with smaller scales the answer is "no" for two reasons: 1) Functional bullets are not produced in scale sizes and 2) The corrosion caused by burnt powder would eventually destroy the value of the weapon unless properly cleaned—a task that would require a very skilled person to disassemble, clean and reassemble such a delicate piece. Dummy rounds are often provided, however, so that functions of the gun can be demonstrated. That being said, some makers specialize in making weapons that do fire small, specially made "pinfire" rounds that make a satisfying "bang" and cloud of smoke much like a fancy cap gun.
A large portion of the miniatures displayed in the photos below are built to 1/3 scale. This is a size that is considered small enough to be a "miniature" while still large enough to be able to duplicate functions in even a fairly complicated weapon. Some craftsmen also built in 2/5 scale. Models at 1/2 size have been built, but they are large enough that some question whether they can actually be considered miniatures. A 1/2 scale Gatling gun, a popular model for home shop builders, for example, can fire .22 long rifle rounds at the same rate as the original that fired .45-70 caliber rounds. It would usually be considered a functional scale model rather than a miniature for collecting purposes.

CETME Rifle Maker: Spanish Government Arsenal (approx. 70 made) 1/4 scale, winner of NRA silver medal # 72 at the National rifle Association Annual Meetings on May 16, 2010. This is a fully functional 1/4 scale miniature of the CETME rifle made at the Spanish government arsenal in Spain. The CETME rifle was developed by the Spanish arsenal to be their front line battle rifle. It was in .308 caliber. H & K later developed the select fire HK G3 and the semi-automatic HK-91 from this rifle. The miniature is 100% fully functional and comes complete in a wood case that includes 17 rounds of machined brass dummy ammunition. You can load the magazine and it will feed, chamber, extract, and eject. This is a select fire weapon and the selector and safety both work. |

The top of each grip handle unscrews to reveal a cleaning brush. The rear sight has the graduated distance markings. The top cover marked with a 5 point Russian star, 1994, and 0006 which is the serial number. There were a total of 14 of these Maxims made of which 7 were the white snow Maxims. The others were olive drab green. The snow Maxims have a large lid on top of the water jacket secured with a bail type latch. This was so that snow or ice could be put into the cooling jacket when temperatures were below freezing. Almost mint perfect condition with just a couple of tiny handling mark chips in the white paint. The blue steel absolutely mint. Complete with a green canvas ammo belt with brass tabs and rivets, and eight dummy cartridges. One of the finest miniature firearms to ever come out of Russia.
