Scotty Hewitt didn’t just build tiny race cars—this miniature oscillating V-4 marine steam engine shows a wealth of detail in a compact size. This miniature was scaled down to 60% of the full-size engine. Scotty modeled it after an engine designed by Jan Gunnarsson in the 1970s. As on the original, the throttle, lubricator, drain valve, and forward/reverse mechanism are all functional on this engine. The miniature engine was originally displayed in a wooden launch, and it won first place in the 1995 Sherline Machinist’s Challenge at the North American Model Engineering Society Expo.
