This Wright Whirlwind J5 model airplane engine was designed by Carl-Eric Olsryd and built by Charles Harty, of Colorado, in the 1990s. Castings, gears, and bearings were provided by Mr. Olsryd of Sweden. Plans were available, and drawings published in SIC Magazine could be used to construct the engine. This model measures about 11” in diameter, 10.5”-long, and weighs 16 pounds 8 ounces (including steel base). The Whirlwind was used to power the Spirit of St. Louis across the Atlantic in 1927.
