Wooden Models
Harley-Davidson Softail Classic
A detail from Sunia’s scale wooden Harley-Davidson Softail. Hidden inside the saddlebags is a sound system that plays the sound of a Harley motor when the throttle grip is twisted. The marker lights and brake lights work, too.
Wooden Traction Engine
A steam traction engine features both raw wood and a few key painted parts, adding a little more color to this project.
Wooden Fire Engine
A close-up shows some of the instruments and controls on the side of the engine. Sunia’s wooden models are well detailed.
Wells Fargo Stagecoach
Mr. Reznik’s model of a Wells Fargo stagecoach required more than just woodworking skills. He also made the harnesses for the horse team from leather.
Wells Fargo Stagecoach
Notice the detailed cargo on the roof, and smaller details like the rolled up window shades.
Wooden Steam Driven Pumper
This horse-drawn, steam driven pumper is what the early city fire departments used. A lantern sits by the rear wheel.
Wooden Hummer
Sunia’s scale wooden model of the popular SUV, which was originally designed for military use.
Wooden 2-2-2 Locomotive
Sunia’s vintage 2-2-2 steam locomotive, tender and coach contains many parts. This engine was designed along the lines of the English John Stephenson-built Adler, which was the first locomotive put into commercial service in Germany in 1835.
Wooden Wall Clock
This open-gear wall clock was made entirely from wood, with three floating dials, and three hands (hour, minute and second). It has a fourteen day wind that runs with an accuracy of +/- 1 second/month. The clock is 36” tall, and 18” wide. Sunia used bloodwood for this piece.
Wooden 4-4-0 Locomotive
A slightly modern 4-4-0 American steam locomotive from the late 1800’s is also part of Sunia’s collection.
HMS Victory
Sunia built this model of the famous HMS Victory. In 1805, Admiral Nelson sailed on this ship at the battle of Trafalgar. It’s a 100-gun frigate with elaborate admiralty rigging. The model ship is 40” long, 29” tall, and 14” wide. The wood is walnut and cherry.
Wooden Farm Tractor
Sunia’s model tractor was made from walnut, maple, cherry, and white ash wood. The model is 10” long, 6” wide, and 6” tall.
Wooden Backhoe Tractor
This model backhoe tractor is 24” long, 10” tall at its highest point, and 6” wide. Sunia used black walnut, maple, and cherry wood.
Wooden Semi Tractor
Sunia’s cab-over semi tractor model was built from cherry, walnut and maple wood.
Wooden M1 Abrams Tank
This M1 Abrams battle tank measures about 24” long (including the main gun barrel), 9-1/2” wide, and 7” tall. The woods used were European Beech, walnut, and maple. The tank was designed in the 1970’s by Chrysler Defense, which was later purchased by General Dynamics.
Wooden M1 Abrams Tank
The M1 Abrams is a third-generation main battle tank produced in the United States. It was named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and Commander of US military forces in Vietnam.
Wooden WWII Era Jeep
Continuing on a military theme, this is Sunia’s WWII era Jeep and carriage made from Beech wood.
Wooden Colt Peacemaker
Sunia finished this impressive model in June 2012. It’s a large Colt .45 Peacemaker type revolver made from black walnut and European Beech. The revolver is 32” long and 7” tall.
Wooden Boom Crane
Also added in June 2012 was this lattice boom crane made from European Beech and walnut. The model crane is 24” long, 18” tall, 12” wide.
Caterpillar Loader
This Caterpillar loader features light and dark colored contrasting woods. The loader is articulated at the center, and has instrument details on the cab dashboard.
Caterpillar Loader
Sunia’s Caterpillar loader is made of maple and black walnut. The tractor is 22” long, 8” wide, and 10” tall.
Well Drilling Rig
A water well drilling rig, made from European Beech, maple, and black walnut. It was completed in November 2013.
Horse-Drawn Carriage
Sunia’s model of a horse-drawn carriage was added in March 2014. Ash and maple wood were used.
Wooden Dump Truck
Sunia’s wooden dump truck is 21” long, 7” wide, and 9” tall. It consists of European Beech and Ash wood.
1949 Ford “Woody” Wagon
Sunia used European Beech and maple wood to build this 1949 Ford “Woody” wagon.
Metal Working Projects
Along with his talent for woodworking, Sunia has also completed several projects in metal. Some examples were sent in by his son in August, 2010.
Red Wing Motor
Sunia built this air-cooled Red Wing motor. It has a bore of 1-1/4”, and stroke of 2”. This gasoline engine puts out 2.5 hp, and is a fully functional 1/3 scale model. It runs on regular gasoline and uses a buzz coil for ignition. The engine is 15″ long, 9-1/2” tall, 9-1/2” wide, and weighs 40 lbs.
Horizontal Stationary Steam Engine
Sunia’s working stationary steam engine has a 1-1/2” bore, and a 2-1/2” stroke. This is a double-acting engine rated at 1/4 hp. The engine is 7-1/2” tall, 18” long, 8” wide, and weighs 35 lbs. The flywheel diameter is 6-7/8”.
Miniature Precision Drill Press
This is a 6-speed drill press that Sunia designed and built to use on his projects. It has a speed range of 1,800 to 7,200 rpm. The drill press features a depth indicator gage, quill travel of 1-1/4”, and a high precision 1/2” Albrecht chuck. The drill is made of steel, and is 16” high, 10” deep and 6-1/2” wide.
Vertical Steam Engine
This 1905 vertical steam engine called, “Domestic” was built at 1/3 scale. The engine puts out 1/2 hp to drive an 8” flywheel. It has a 1-5/16” bore. The ignition system is of the “Make & Break” type. Sunia built this engine in April, 2011.
Holt 75 Caterpillar Tractor Engine
This far more complicated 4-cylinder engine demonstrates the extent of Mr. Reznik’s metalworking skills. The Holt 75 Caterpillar casting kit was first introduced by Cole’s Power Models of Ventura, CA around 1940, but after WWII it lay dormant. Cole’s reactivated it in 1970, after a new set of patterns was made to comply with the modern foundry practices.
Holt 75 Caterpillar Tractor Engine
This is a 4-cylinder, 4-cycle, water cooled in-line engine. The full-size engines were most successfully used in tanks during WWI. The speed of the engine is controlled by a centrifugal fly-ball governor, which was commonly used for governing the speed of steam engines.
Holt 75 Caterpillar Tractor Engine
The model engine has a bore of 1”, and a stroke of 1-1/4”. The crankcase holds the lubricating oil that is distributed by the crankshaft as it spins. However, external rocker arms must be manually lubricated before operating the engine. It’s water cooled and burns gasoline using a spark ignition.
