The stamped steel front cover and oil pan are included here. The rocker arms were also stamped. A US quarter lends a sense of scale.

With the engine now assembled, it’s hard to appreciate the fine work in the pistons, rods, crank, and camshaft. Note also the tiny oil pump and pickup.

4-Cylinder Coyotee Engine
The brass tubing fuel tank doesn’t need to be very large. This engine doesn’t burn much fuel.

A piston, valve, connecting rod, spark plug, and camshaft for the Coyotee engine. A US quarter provides scale reference.
Single-Cylinder OHV Engine—“Lil Red”
Single-Cylinder Lil Red Engine
This project started in 1994, when the Coyotee had been completed, but Jim was unable to get it to run. Jim built this engine as a “proof-of-concept,” to show to himself that an engine this small could actually run. It has about the same piston size as the Coyotee.
Single-Cylinder Lil Red Engine
By early 1995, Jim’s Lil Red engine was running. He then went back and applied what he had learned to the 4-cylinder Coyotee.
