1/5 Scale Bridgeport Mill
Barry used the following tools to make this miniature: Myford Super 7B lathe, Raglan vertical milling machine, Warco 1/2” hobby drilling machine, and a Kennedy mini hacksaw.

Barry used drawings from an old operator’s handbook for the model’s design. He also took dimensions from an actual Bridgeport being used at Gratton Engineering in Derby, England.

A close-up of the Bridgeport table reveals more tiny features. The project was started January 4, 1997, and completed September 20, 1997—just in time for Bridgeport’s 100th anniversary.

1/5 Scale Dean Smith & Grace Type 2148 Lathe
A Dean Smith & Grace type 2148 heavy duty gap bed lathe in 1/5 scale. Barry’s miniature lathe is pictured here with some of the awards it has garnered. To make this machine, Barry used the Dean Smith & Grace sales literature along with a full-size machine courtesy of English Electric Lincoln and Royal Ordnance Westcott.

This highly-detailed working miniature was made between March 8 and October 11, 2000 from cast iron billet and aluminum stock. Once again, no castings were used.
1/5 Scale Archdale MH50 Radial Arm Drilling Machine
This miniature Archdale radial arm drilling machine stands 26” tall, and was based on measurements from the full-size machine.
1/5 Scale Archdale MH50 Radial Arm Drilling Machine
Barry built this machine between May 24 and August 28, 1998. It’s made from cast iron billet, aluminum, and mild steel stock, without the use of castings.
1/14 Scale Fobco Star Drilling Machine
Built between March 8-14, 2000, this tiny 1/14 scale Fobco Star drilling machine is another one of Barry’s sub-miniature machine projects. Barry actually used his miniature Jordan precision mill to make some of the parts for this even smaller machine! The miniature Fobco was machined from small cast iron blocks, and the base was turned from solid perspex (plexiglass). When on display, Barry encloses the machine in a perspex bottle to protect the .023” diameter drill bit, which can be easily broken.
