Scale Model V-12 Curtiss D-12D Engine
V-12 Curtiss D-12D Engine Construction
The scale model V-12 Curtiss D-12D engine that Alan made for his biplane model is a masterpiece. No castings were used for this scale model engine. Each piece was machined from solid stock.
V-12 Curtiss D-12D Engine Construction
Building this engine required knowledge and skill in a number of areas, from machining to cam grinding. In fact, Mr. Ingersoll designed and built his own machinery to grind the cam.

Note that a pencil was placed in each picture to provide scale reference.
V-12 Curtiss D-12D Engine
Alan’s completed V-12 Curtiss engine was removed from the biplane model and displayed at the 1998 NAMES Expo in Michigan. Alan attended the show to receive his Craftsman of the Year Award, and viewers got to admire this incredible model engine.
V-12 Curtiss D-12D Engine
With the propeller in place, this miniature engine looks every bit like the real thing.

These last photos were taken when Alan’s miniature engine was on display again at the 2004 Men, Metal and Machines show in Visalia, CA.
Cygnet Benchtop Mill
Cygnet Benchtop Mill
Alan designed and built this Cygnet mill himself. He even used it for some of his small projects. In 2005, Dr. Bob Kradjian donated this Cygnet to the Joe Martin Foundation.
Cygnet Benchtop Mill
This machine is simply too nice to sit on a shelf. Accordingly, we have put it to use for small milling projects in the machine shop at the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum.

The Cygnet is yet another example of Alan Ingersoll’s masterful machining skills.
