This project began with a Testors 1/4 scale plastic model engine kit. Instead of assembling the model engine, Roger Butzen reverse engineered the pieces to produce many drawings, and then machined parts for his running engine. After completion in 2000, he demonstrated his engine at many model engineering shows, car shows, and local modeling clubs–but Roger’s passion was to run it in an R/C car.
After many years of engineering and fabrication, Roger finished this 1/4 scale Cobra and test ran it a few times. Initial tests indicated erratic behavior due to interference from the spark ignition system. He spent several months of testing to isolate the R/C unit from interference and finally accomplished his goal in 2022.
The Cobra burns unleaded gasoline. It measures about 38”-long, 17”-wide, 12.5”-tall, and weighs about 60 lbs. Mr. Butzen’s hemi powered Cobra is a work of art, and the functional miniature is on display courtesy of the Engine Collection of Paul and Paula Knapp.
