Dan Lutz was a longtime model airplane builder, engine collector, and antique car enthusiast. Mr. Lutz’ son, Dennis, recently donated Dan’s scale model R/C Ohlsson Pacemaker floatplane for display at the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum. The model airplane was built at an impressive scale and made to be flown via radio control. The museum had previously obtained one of Mr. Lutz’ other scale model airplanes, a working replica of the original Ohlsson Pacemaker, which is also on display. The very first Pacemaker was originally designed, built, and flown by Irv Ohlsson, who was a good friend of Mr. Lutz. Visitors can now see Dan’s replica Pacemaker along with his floatplane version, which was once flown off the waters of Lake Elsinore.
Mr. Lutz spent most of his adult life in the model airplane industry working for K&B manufacturing (model engines) and Kraft Systems (radio control systems). He was very involved with R/C airplanes not just as a hobby, but also as a professional. As a result, the airplanes that Dan built and flew are top-of-the-line, and they illustrate his exceptional skill as a craftsman and his passion for model making.
